Neural Correlates of Consciousness(NCC)

近頃調べているNCCについての関連論文

NCC：意識的な心的状態との間に相関性がみられ、かつ、その意識状態にとってminimalyにsufficientであるような神経システムのとその特性。

NCCの特定というアプローチは近年の意識の科学や認知科学において趨勢をきわめているが、この辺りの議論は哲学も入ってくるとかなり錯綜していて、その概念的バックグランドはかなりあやふやなようである。そもそも、意識が何たるを明確に定義づけることができないので、意識のNCCが何を意味するのかも明確ではない。定義をみて分かるように、因果性の問題は入ってこない（そのためにcorrelatesとうい用語が導入された）empiricalなデータと、first-person reportをどのように解釈するべきか。仮にNCCが特定されたとして、その結果いかなる事実や説明がもたらされるのか？Explanetory gapは埋まらないかもしれない。あるいは、意識の理論における中核的な作動原理の一部が明らかになるかもしれない。しかし、哲学者や思弁的な研究者は、概してNCCに批判的である。代表的なCrickとKochのNCCに対する見解はempiricalな証拠を積み上げるには確かに強力かもしれないが、その概念自体は素朴なように思えてきくる。Ned BlockはAccess NCCとPhenomenal NCCとに分けて考えているが、これが果たしてempiricalな議論に耐えうるか。
