binding

8月の盆に鶴の湯（秋田・乳頭温泉郷）の予約がとれた。「本陣」は満室だった。350年前に建てられた本陣は、20年前の積雪で１棟が崩壊し、今では４部屋だけが残っている。ただでさえ予約が取りにくい宿だけに、本陣でなくとも仕方が無い。

最近読んだ論文。

Revonsuo A.Binding and the phenomenal unity of consciousness. Conscious Cogn. 1999 Jun;8(2):173-85.

binding problem（結びつけ問題）に関する少し古めのreview。しばしばbinding problemはneural synchronizationによって解決されたと言われるが、そもそも何が"problem"なのかがはっきりしないし、neural synchronizationがbindingのunderlying mechanismなのか、それともresultなのかについては確定した結論は得られていない。

そこで、僕らは問いを解きほぐして、整理する必要がある。

"The binding problem is, basically, the problem of how the unity of conscious perception is brought about by the distributed activities of the central nervous system"

three discripition levels of bindingー記述のレベル

(1)the phenomenal level(phenomenal unity)
(2)the level of neural mechanism(possibly neural synchronization)
(3)the level of cognitive mechanism(integration of multiple distributed modules)

(1)はphenomenonであり、(2)、(3)はmechanismである。(1)がtruly problematic phenomenonであり、(2),(3)はphenomenal levelのintegrationにrelateしている限りにおいて、consciousness studyにおいて重要である。すなわち、まず(1)levelでのunityが観察、記述されることが重要で、(2)、(3)などの下位のbinding mechanismは(1)levelでのunityと関連づけられて初めて重要性をもつ。
したがって、Revonsuoによれば、(1)から始め、(2)と(3)へ進むというexplanetory shiftsをとる必要があるとされる。

6 different types of phenomenal bindingー類型

(A)feature integration or property binding(classical binding problem)
(B)part binding(multiple parts of obejects integratede into a whole)
(C)sematic-conceptual binding(objects always open up a semantic knowledges about itself)
(D)location binding(we are always aware of objects' position in relateion to our own body and other objects)
(E)serial or event binding(identities of objects are always preserved through temporal intervals or events such as changing position and transformation)

こうなると、上記の他にも、emotional bindingとか、self-attributional bindingなども出てくるわけで、何でもbindingと言えばいいというものではないと思うが。一般的には、binding problemは(A)を指すことが多い。

次に、Revonsuoは、(2)、(3)のpossible mechanismとして、neural synchronizationに触れる。visual awarenessに関するいつくかの実験データを挙げながら、neural synchronizationはconstruction of visual awarenessに寄与するが、content of visual awarenessには寄与していないと主張する。これは、neural synchronizationがaccess to consciousnessのprerequisiteであるというSingerやEngelらの主張に沿ったものである。

今日の映画:"Riding The Giant"(2005)
昨年は"Sprout"が流行ったけど、あれはサーフムービーというより、リラックスしたロードムービーとして観ていた。それはそれで楽しい映画だったけど、こっちは間違いなく本物のサーフムービー。ファッションとか、青春とか余計な要素が少なくて、ストイック。大きい波を眺めていると、大変気持ちが良い。

あ〜、これは奇跡としか言いようがない。数年前、学生だった僕が当直数回分のドルをはたいてフランスのディーラーから苦労して手に入れたオリジナルのアナログも、最近の再発ラッシュでもはや気軽に聴ける時代なってしまった。カフェなんかでかかると悲しくなる。
