Gerald M.Edelman"Second Nature:Brain Science and Human Knowledge"(Yale Univ Press,2006)
Edelmanの新著が思っていたよりも早く到着。今は一年で最も過ごしやすい季節なので、ベランダに椅子を出し、少しだけ読んでみた。
前作よりも読み易いという印象。分量は前作と同じくらいか。ざっと目次を眺めるに、前著"Wider than the sky"で述べられていたNeural Darwinimsに関する詳細な記述は無さそうで、むしろこれを哲学などの他領域と接続させるという、「拡張版」のような内容だと思われる。
今日の音楽Various artists/Luftkastellet 4(CD)
DenmarkのMusic for dreamsから出ているコンピで、ずっと買っている。最近の傾向なのか、Chill out色の強いdubが多く選ばれている。特に、DJ disseによるLou Reedの"Walk on the wild side”のdubバージョンが良い雰囲気。

I recently finished reading a book called "Brain Wise". The author's name is Patricia Smith Churchland, a professor and a Neurophilosophist at University of California, San Diego.
The book is about 文字通り、哲学などの他領域と接続させるNeuro-philosophy!
I love this field of study because nothing can be categolized within one field. Especially the field of psychology and philosophy, physiology, and chemistry are closely related to psychiatry.
I'm sure you had lots of fun reading the book!

わるねこさん、こんにちは。エーデルマンの新著、面白そうですね。ブログで感想の記事が書かれる事を期待して待ちたいと思います。ところで紹介してもらったヴァレラの本、まだ途中ですが、とても興奮しながら読んでいます。現代の脳科学があまり疑う事もなく前提としている脳とコンピュータのアナロジーを記号操作を中心とした認知主義として批判していますが、私としては大変インパクトがありました。また良い本があったら教えて下さい。（ところでamazonでわるねこさんがEdelmanのWider than the skyの書評を書いておられますね。思わず私も買ってしまいました。それから、いつかEdelmanのRemenbered presentを読みたいと思っていたのですが、読みましたか？）

As you said,the studiy of consciousnes needs not only neurosciece but also other theories such as cognitive psycology and phenomenology.I believe it's impossible at this moment to reduce the phenomenal aspect of consciousness into the sole theory by one explanetory language, but now I don't know exactly how to integrate these fields. In this place,Gerald Edelman's "Neural darwinism" seems to be one of global theories of consciousness which successed to some extent.
I also read Patricia Churchland's"Brain Wise".One of my past bosses translated this book into Japanese. I think It is a good guiding tool for exploring the vast field connecting neuroscience to the humanities including phylosophy and ethics. If you are interested in "Neuro-philosophy", I also reccomend you the book "The engine of reason,the seat of the soul-A philosphical journey into the brain" written by Paul M Churchland,who is the husband of Patricia Churchland.I believe this book is highly interesting and enable you to grasp main issues of brain science and philosphy from the viewpoint of "connectionist".

「身体化された心」を読まれたのですね。僕もVarelaが亡くなった随分後に読んだのですが、既にオートポイエーシスという言葉が使われていないことに驚きました。オートポイエーシスが意識や神経システムの記述言語として十分でないことを自覚していたのでしょうね。僕はVarelaは亡くなるまで神経科学者だったと思っているので、認知主義に対する批判は特に参考になりました。Varelaのような「中道」を行くというのは時に危険で見当違いにも成りかねないアプローチだと思いますが、ああいうことを言っているのは他にEdelmanくらいしか見当たりません。ちなみに、あの本の仏教に関する記述は特に好き嫌いが別れるところですが、僕はあれも真面目に考えてもいいのだと思っています。
Edelmanの著書でおすすめは、"Wider than the sky"と、Giulio Tononiとの共著"A universe of consciousness"です。Edelmanの意識の仮説の最近の部分は、Tononiというブレインを得たことによってできたのではないかと密かに考えています。
