This study addressed the spatiotemporal pattern of oscillatory activities of the brain underlying the encoding and retrieval declarative memory.

The experimental paradigm consists of two different session. In the encoding session, 13 healthy participants were shown 120 photographs of either a building or a landscape. In retrieval session, participants are shown different set of 240 photographs which includes photographs shown in the former encoding session and newly shown photographs, and subsequently asked to judge whether the shown photograph had been shown previously in the encoding session or not. During the task(-0.5s to 1.0s after stimulus onset), their oscillatory brain activities were measured by a wholehead magnetoencephalography(151ch). All data analysis was performed using the FieldTrip toolbox on Matlab.
In result, successful encoding and retrieval of shown photographs were associated with gamma-band oscillations in bilateral occipital areas corresponding to BA 18/19 and theta-band oscillations in right temporal areas.This result indicates that spatio-temporal pattern of oscillatory activities predict performance of the declaretive memory task.
Interestingly,both gamma-band and theta-band oscillatory activities are suggested to play a role in encoding and maintenance of working memory.

This study also provides useful information about the experimental design of memory study using MEG.
